Voting Question: Is it cheaper/better to buy India airline tickets online in U.S. or wait until in India?

Going to India week of August 23, flying MIA-DEL-MIA via Lufthansa. Gone about 3 weeks. Rough itinerary is Delhi-Rishikesh-Kathmandu-Pondicherry-Jaipur. Can buy a Jet airline ticket DEL-KTM-MAA (Chennai)-JAI-DEL for about $500 online which seems OK but I don't want to be tied down to specific dates or plans so would prefer to wait. Any thoughts?
